What causes dry mouth?
Dry mouth is a common side effect of many medications, such as those for hypertension, depression and anxiety, Alzheimer’s, cholesterol and Parkinson’s.
Why dry mouth is bad?
Without the proper moisture and hydration, the oral cavity becomes compromised in all the functions such as tooth decay and difficulty chewing, speaking and swallowing. Bacterias are easier to grow in a dehydrated oral cavity, especially the bad one Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans that may trigger rheumatoid arthritis. It is also an important culprit in periodontitis.
Oral bacterias are the origin of many diseases, such as pulmonary (inhaled pneumonia and other pneumonias), diabetic infections, and infectious endocarditis. Oral cancer is another condition that is attributed to the oral hygiene. Besides medical conditions, others like social, psychological and economical issues can all be caused by oral bacteria and poor oral health .
What to do?
There are many approaches that we use to stimulate the saliva secretion, such as toothpaste, mouth rinse and saliva substitutes. Licorice root is famous for being able to fight hepatitis C, it is also very effective in fight abnormal bacteria flora in the oral cavity. It is useful in the healing of oral ulcers, prevention and healing of teeth decay. If you don’t go to a dentist, or you think your dentist is not a real doctor, next time when you see your doctor, ask her or he to check out your oral cavity.
